The walk to Old San Juan from the Renaissance is about 3.5 miles. Travel options include an infrequent .75 cent bus, 15 dollar taxi ride or a free 50 minute walk.
Old San Juan is a maze of little streets filled with souvenir shops and cafes. There is also a Marshall's which offers 3 floors of discounted treasures. Since I arrived on a Monday most of the museums were closed. I wandered the grounds of the Old San Juan fort but skipped the actual tour which was $3 a person. The grounds also houses a gift shop and a clean bathroom that you can use for .25 cents.
I had an enjoyable afternoon strolling around but unless you are shopping for something specific. You can see most of Old San Juan in a couple hours.

Hello San Juan!
Off on a little side trip before I leave for Morocco next week! So far I would highly recommend the Renaissance La Concha hotel. It's been recently renovated and sits in the heart of the Condado neighborhood filled with shops and cafes.
